With the passage of Montana Senate Bill 100 this session, Naturopathic Physicians in Montana are about to have a powerful new set of tools available to help them help patients, in the form of the full range of pharmacotherapies available to our conventional colleagues.
Any treatment, of course, is not without its risks, and the "controlled substances" carry not only medical but also legal and ethical risks. This lecture will review the different DEA schedules of controlled substances, many of the common medication classes covered (specifically opioids, stimulants, and sedative-hypnotics), as well as how to safely prescribe.
In addition, recommendations will be made for safely, ethically, and legally prescribing these medications, to protect both the patient and one's
practice.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder clinical definition, DSM-V criteria, epidemiology, proposed etiologies, clinical presentation, diagnosis and evaluation, conventional
and naturopathic treatment options will be discussed, as this is a common reason for
appointments in a naturopathic/integrative clinic.
Goals and Objectives:
Understand clinical presentation and DSM-V criteria.
Understand conventional and more expanded diagnostic workup, to ascertain more
precise targets for therapy.
Understand theoretical underlying etiologies of the disease, and how to address them with
treatment interventions that will improve outcomes.
Be able to implement successful naturopathic interventions, which are evidence and
clinically based, to alleviate symptoms and hopefully cure the patient.
Discuss the use commonly prescribed pharmaceutical medications, their indications and
side effects. These will include adolescent and adult medications.

He actively lectures throughout the country and is an influencer within the functional medicine world to educate and empower everyday people to live healthy, fullling life.

Before moving to Connecticut from Seattle, Dr. Born completed precepting with other healthcare providers—including DCs, DPMs, NDs, and MDs—in the areas of geriatric medicine, family medicine, cardiology, urology, men’s health, physical medicine, and emergency medicine at Evergreen Hospital Emergency Department. During his residency, his integrative medicine expertise was further honed with rotations in Virginia Mason Hospital’s department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Spine Clinic, Swedish Family Medicine’s department of Integrative Medicine, and Harborview Medical Center’s Emergency Department. Dr. Born also volunteered as an attending physician for the Alternative Healthcare Access Campaign (AHAC), which serves indigent populations.
Past accomplishments include the Bastyr University Graduate Fund Scholarship; a venture grant to the British College of Osteopathic Medicine in London; and the Outstanding Teaching Award from Hess Educational Organization in Taichung City, Taiwan. He was a volunteer at North Country Community Health Center in Flagstaff, Arizona and research assistant for Alan R. Gaby, MD.
He has advanced training and certification in homeopathy, completing an 18-month course at the New England School of Homeopathy.

Peter Koshland, PharmD is a graduate of Georgetown University (1996) and the University of California at San Francisco School of Pharmacy (2000). Peter opened his compounding pharmacy, Koshland Pharm, in 2009 in San Francisco, and has continued to work with doctors and patients on individualized, integrative therapies that make a difference in the quality of patients’ day-to-day lives.
He trains and consults with doctors across the state of California in the areas of hormone replacement, thyroid disorders and compounding applications for dermatology, urology, and pain management.

Dr. Timothy “Bill” Walter is Associate Medical Director of the Community Health Centers of Lane County, in Eugene, Oregon, where he has practiced as a naturopathic primary care physician for over 10 years.
In addition to clinical and administrative duties, he serves on the Oregon Board of Naturopathic Medicine (his state licensing board), is Vice-Chair of the Clinical Advisory Panel from Trillium Community Health Plan (a local Medicaid Coordinated Care Organization) and is a Delegate from Oregon to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians House of Delegates. He has previously served as the Chair of Trillium’s Chronic Pain Committee and Chair of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians Scientific Affairs Committee.
He has given over 40 CME-approved lectures to conventional and naturopathic conferences around the United States discussing natural and pharmaceutical pain management, pain policy, healthcare integration, and pharmaceutical reviews.
Dr. Walter received his Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine from Bastyr University in Kenmore, Washington, and then completed Naturopathic Residency at the Bastyr Center for Natural Health in Seattle. He lives in Eugene, Oregon with his wife and teenage daughter and their pets, where they enjoy the natural and cultural bounty of the Pacific Northwest, as well as enjoying science fiction and board games.

The Montana Prescription Drug Registry (MPDR) was authorized by the Montana Legislature in 2011 and became functional in November 2012 as an online tool to provide a list of controlled substance prescriptions to health care providers to improve patient care and safety.
Nikki Griffis, PharmD. Nikki is a pharmacist and the Program Manager for the Montana Prescription Drug Registry (MPDR). She joined the Montana Board of Pharmacy staff in October 2020 and most recently coordinated the implementation of Bamboo Health as the new MPDR software vendor. Nikki has a pharmacy informatics certification from the American Society of Health System Pharmacists and previously worked as an acute clinical pharmacist.
